Useful Info

Night is a Shadow Cast By the World is a novel by Toronto writer Brian Panhuyzen (who previously published a short story collection with Cormorant Books). Night is a Shadow is currently available for $2.99 as an ebook only from online retailers such as Amazon, iTunes, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, and Sony. A print book version is in the works.

Night is a Shadow is a literary-action-adventure, significantly different than most Canadian fiction in that it tells a highly entertaining and at times suspenseful story, with ample doses of action, romance, comedy, and politics. It is written in an innovative, poetic, and yet highly-readable style.

Writing of the novel was funded by major grants from all three levels of government, through the Canada Council, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council.

The book features a Douglas DC-3, the most famous and most produced aircraft in history. The book's preview launch date was December 17th, the 76th anniversary of the first DC-3 flight (the official launch will occur in mid-January, date and time TBA – subscribe to updates if you want to be informed when the date and location have been set). Fact-checking on the book was performed by Buffalo Airways pilot Gord Cooling, who makes appearances on the History Channel's successful Ice Pilots NWT series.

Cordell Bechard, the book's main character, runs an eccentric independent bookstore, and the novel concerns itself a great deal with books – indeed, they are used to serve clandestine purposes.

Brian Panhuyzen's second novel, The Sky Manifest – a suspenseful literary novel about a man's violent and calamitous cross-country journey in the wake of the deaths of his wife and infant daughter – will be published in the spring of 2013 by Toronto's ECW Press. This book was also supported by large grants from the aforementioned agencies.

Open Book Toronto will be serializing Night is a Shadow beginning in January 2012.
